Dr Mogens Hansen Receives 2017 Henry Schein Cares International Veterinary Community Service Award

The Award recognizes veterinarians who have performed exceptional acts of valour or demonstrated a commitment to serve the international community.

Dr Hansen was nominated for the Award by the Danish Small Animal Veterinary Association (DSAVA) in recognition of his long-standing involvement in animal welfare in developing countries.

He was presented with the Award during WSAVA World Congress 2017, which took place from 25-28 September in Copenhagen.

Dr Hansen owns a small animal veterinary clinic in the north of Seeland in Denmark.  In 2006, he founded an organization called ‘Animal SOS’ – now called ‘Vets Beyond Borders Denmark’. 

For the last 15 years and, most recently, through Vets Beyond Borders Denmark, he has dedicated his spare time to co-ordinating and participating in more than 15 animal birth control and rabies vaccination programs for stray dogs in India and Thailand. 

These programs aim to neuter and vaccinate at least 70% of the street dog population in a particular area and to make sure that they then have a local care giver who will feed them. During Dr Hansen’s time working with Vets Beyond Borders Denmark, it has supported local organizations and veterinarians around the world and has neutered and vaccinated more than 10,000 dogs and cats.

Dr Hansen has also supported a range of animal welfare projects in Central America, Africa, Eastern Europe and Asia.

Dr Hansen is a co-founder of and contributor to www.netdyredoktor.dk, a website he set up with Danish colleagues that has become the most popular online destination for animal health in the Nordic region.

Commenting on receiving the Award, Dr Hansen said: “I am very happy, that my colleagues at DSAVA and at Henry Schein appreciate our work with stray dogs all over the world. It is of great importance, not only for the health and wellbeing of the dogs, but also for preventing rabies and other transmissible diseases in humans, especially children.

The award will help Vets Beyond Borders Denmark to continue its work to the benefit of veterinary and animal welfare organizations globally.”

Dr Hansen was presented with the Henry Schein Cares International Veterinary Community Service Award by Mike Ellis, President, European Animal Health Group, Henry Schein, Inc. He was also presented with a check for ,000, which he has asked to be donated to Vets Beyond Borders Denmark.

Mr Ellis said: “Henry Schein feels deeply connected with the veterinary profession in supporting animal health, animal welfare and public health. The projects Dr Hansen has initiated reflect these in a wonderful way, making him the perfect recipient of the Henry Schein Cares International Veterinary Community Service Award.”
