Founding of the World Association of Veterinary Dermatology

(24.03.2010) On the 11th March 2010, the World Association for Veterinary Dermatology was formally incorporated as a not-for-profit limited liability company registered in Scotland.

This company was developed from the World Congress of Veterinary Dermatology Association, reflecting its broader remit to foster and advance the discipline of veterinary dermatology globally.

The goals of the association, in addition to overseeing the World Congresses every four years, are to guide and encourage the development of national and multinational organizations devoted to the discipline, to foster education in the field, to provide funding to working groups and committees active in any area relevant to dermatology and to provide scholarships to those wishing to attend congresses.

It has also developed a number of publications, including Advances in Veterinary Dermatology (volumes 1-6) which incorporates the scientific proceedings of each congress.

In short, the goals are reflected in the recently adopted mission statement which is: “To promote the worldwide advancement of veterinary dermatology”

Membership of the Association is open to large national and multinational organizations devoted to veterinary dermatology. The initial 5 members were the American Academy and College of Veterinary Dermatology, the Canadian Academy of Veterinary Dermatology and the European College and Society of Veterinary Dermatology.

At the 2009 Annual meeting, the Asian Society of Veterinary Dermatology and the Dermatology Chapter of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists were admitted to membership. It is anticipated that other organizations will follow as and when they attain the appropriate stage of development.
